LAKE AREA ALERTS

It's Time to Attack Crime in the Lake Area. Read more...

In an effort to raise public awareness of crime, and to reduce problems in our community, the Association is offering this Lake Area Neighborhood Alerts webpage. It is designed to get the word out to residents about a particular problem or crime in the area. The goal is to raise public awareness with the hope that when residents view these alerts, they will call to report similar suspicious activity to the Police.

Please email us when you see something that your neighbors need to know. Thanks.

WHAT TO DO WHEN A CRIME OCCURS IN OUR AREA:

    1. If a crime has occurred with no suspect, report it at www.elkhartcountysheriff.com

    2. If a suspect is known an officer needs to be called out to take a report.  All reports that come in to the Sheriff's Department are looked at by Detective Holloman who then will send out crime bulletins with tracking information so we can attempt to profile when these crimes are going to occur and try to get extra patrols in these areas.  If the crimes go unreported, there is no way for us to track them, thus, we do not necessarily know if an area needs extra patrols.  DIAL: 911

10/23/2011 - Car theft on Beach Dr.  The car was in the garage but possibly the door was open. Be careful not to leave your garage door open.

8/28/2011 - Two residents on North Shore Dr., Kent Baskerville and Jenny Boomershine have both found gas tanks missing from their boats this week. Several other boats were lose from one tie-up line, causing one boat to be resting up against the seawall on Saturday (8/27).  Another boat was lose earlier in the week. All of the boats involved were within 5 houses of each other... around 26048 North Shore.

May 22, 2011 - A jet ski was stolen from the front of a home on Aqua Drive, sometime between Saturday evening and Sunday morning.

August 21/22, 2010 Theft on Lake Drive - 5 Hanging flower baskets stolen on Lake Dr. If you have any information, please contact us: simon@simontonlake.org

August 11th, 2010 - Multiple break-ins on North Shore Dr. - A van was broken into on North Shore, sometime during the night.  They only took some jumper cables.  While they were out in their driveway they saw the sheriff just a few doors down at the Baskervilles.  They had found some clothing and a purse in their driveway this morning.  Another neighbor further west down North Shore stopped when he saw the sheriff to tell him of something at his house.  The sheriff said they had a person in mind for these crimes, but it reminds us that we need to keep our cars locked when they sit out at night.

Thursday, December 3, 2009 From the Sheriff's Department:
I'm passing along some information to you.  Last night 12-2-09 around 0300 we had a report of a male subject entering an unlocked/open garage on Maplewood Dr on the south side.  I was in the area with another officer and I found a male subject riding his bike south on CR 9 south of Lake Dr.  The male subject fled from me and I caught him trying to enter a residence.  The guy was found to have two warrants.  I believe he was probably the one entering the garage but have nothing to tie him to it.  His warrants are significant enough that he will probably be sitting in jail for a while.

There are two things that I want to point out if you can pass the information along.  From the information provided, the garage that was entered had either an unlocked door or it was open to begin with.  Everyone needs to be reminded that things need to be kept locked if possible including sheds, garages, and cars.

A good thing to point out is that the homeowner did the right thing by immediately reporting the incident to the Sheriff's Department, which allowed us to respond effectively to the area.

If you have anything to pass along, please let me know.  We will continue to be heavily patroling the area until things calm down.  Hopefully this arrest may slow some of the issues down that we have seen on the South side. Extra patrols have been added to Simonton Lake over the past couple months and from what has been reported, it seems the crimes have been slowed a little bit.  I will make sure the patrols continue and hopefully we can come up with some good results to slow these crimes down even more.

    Wednesday, September 30th - Vandalism & Theft

This is a pix of Tim & Phyllis Nusbaum's car (North Shore Drive) this morning, Thursday, October 1st.  Make sure you take extra care when locking up for the night.

Last Wednesday, September 23rd, Bill & Susie Broderick had their 8' fountain knocked over and destroyed and a car near Ryan & Amy Matherly's home had all the windows smashed.  The association is looking into the response from the Sheriff's Department and proper procedure for the residents, when a crime occurs.

It’s Time to Attack Crime on the Lake
The Simonton Lake Safety committee met on Monday October 12th, 2009. There was much discussion about the amount of theft and vandalism currently taking place around the lake. The Safety Committee encourages all lake area residents to report any thefts, break ins, vandalism etc., going back 6 months, in order to establish a pattern of crime. The more details in the report, the better law enforcements chance of nabbing these criminals. Descriptions of cars, people, time of theft or vandalism...anything that can help the committee along with law enforcement will be appreciated.

Recent thefts and vandalism reports can be seen on the website and will also be reported in the newsletter. With your help we can stop this nonsense. Please email any information you may have to Chris Toles. Chris's email is CMT6061@Comcast.net. Neighborhood Watch signs will soon appear in our neighborhoods. The Simonton Lake Safety Committee thanks you for your support.
